Some DJs refuse to use MP3s at all, saying even the best of them sound bad compared to lossless audio. The MP3 is easily the most widespread of the lossy formats. avi video files and codecs can tell you! With audio, you don’t really need to know about this but if you’re interested, there a lot of dry depth on this Wikipedia page). (By the way, there’s a distinction to be drawn between “containers” and “formats”, as anyone who’s ever dabble with. The trade-off with these is that they take up much more room and are also harder to move around because of their size. Uncompressed lossless files are simply straight recordings of the original, with nothing done to them. Compressed lossless audio has had inaudible changes made to reduce file size – they’re typically not as small as lossy files, but the changes are enough to make a big difference to size nonetheless. These files come in two types – compressed and uncompressed. Lossless, meanwhile, is audio recorded without any musical data removed. This means that the audio you play has got bits missing from it, due to having been altered to make the file smaller. The algorithms that lossy formats use try and remove parts of the music where it doesn’t matter so much – but the smaller the file is compressed to with these formats, the more trashed it becomes. Lossy audio is easily the most common of the types, basically because the ubiquitous MP3 is “lossy”. Let’s look a little closer… Lossless vs lossy audio But that I need to use a separate freeware tool like xACT encode to AIFF before processing FLAC to AIFF just so PN doesn't fuck up my tracks tagging and removes all artwork! It must have been at least 4000-8000 tracks where I later manually dragged artwork into iTunes. With news this week that Apple wants to make “24-bit” files available through iTunes, we thought it would be a good time to revisit the music formats that are out there and look at what they mean for digital DJs.Īs a digital DJ, it pays to know your audio formats: Not only should you be aware of the different audio formats that exist, so you recognise them when you come across them, but also you should know when the use of each of the formats is appropriate and when it is to be avoided. proves they give fuck all about it, just $$): not to use PN's conversion ONLY the volume, clipped peaks and compression correction, so you have a library where tracks are of an equal loudness. It a bloody shame that after all this time, I come to this in hindsight pretty simple conclusion (which I.M.O. Hope this helps some of you out here (quite a few similar posts from frustrated customers) who were experiencing metadata / artwork issues too and not getting solved here on the PN community. this strips a lot of metadata and artwork, when done directly from non aiff tagged files like FLAC and then process directly in PN with output as AIFF 16-bit or whatever format you desire? Perhaps devs could look into the file conversion part for solving this bug, a.t.m. You need to encode as AIFF before using PN, to not have this problem! (mp3 hasn't shown this problem, but I don't have a lot of those, but im sure you could improvise a similar work around if it is needed)Ĥ-Save the tags and embedded artwork that is found (uncheck import to iTunes, where / if this applies (Jaikoz) then decode all tagged files to aiff in other app (xACT worked for me), you'l see all metadata and artwork remains intact after decode, like after a regular decode transcode in XLD for example.ĥ-Now process all lossless files with PN, you'll see it will retain all previously saved info!

I just started by eliminating file type conversion from the process and all metadata sand saved embedded artwork now stays put! So this has become functional for me again.ġ -First convert all wav to aiff first with a different app, such as xACT!ģ -Meta tag with your favourite tagger: Jaikoz/Yate/mp3tag on all formats. I would assume dev probably hadn't started looking to fix this, if they were at all. My working workflow (So glad this is at least a bit functional again!) and im amazed / very disappointed at how easy to find and devs did not spot this when examining these all pretty similar reports, as it was my first step in investigating a fix to this madness. I have stumbled upon a fix for this problem:
